SOULS encourages all law students to get out, be active, and have fun. To this effect, SOULS runs several social sports teams, and also holds one-off sporting events. Check them out below! If you have any questions, get in touch via the Contact page, or have a chat to Mary Bollen, our 2017 sports representative.
Keep an eye on our Facebook page for upcoming sports events/fixtures!
Perhaps the most popular and dominant social netball team in all of Otago, the Swans are a force to be reckoned with on the court. The Swans play in a rolling-subs style so that everyone can join in on the fun. Playing with the Swans is a great way to meet new people, have fun, and stay fit. Give it a go!
If social rugby is your thing, look no further than the Vultures. The Vultures compete against social teams from around Dunedin, including several from other faculties. Often joined by the insatiable Mark Henaghan, the Vultures are a great way for players and supporters alike to get out of the library and to make some new friends.
The SOULS Seahawks are Dunedin’s answer to the NBA. If you love basketball, get yourself out of the library, get down to the court, and get involved in some fun, social ‘ballin. With rolling-subs, the Seahawks are always on the lookout for new faces to join the team. Listen out for game announcements throughout the year!
The Harriers offer relaxed, social group runs around Dunedin. If you’re looking to clear your head in the morning, wanting to meet some new people in an informal setting, or just wanting some exercise, get involved with the Harriers! As with all SOULS sports, new members are always welcome.
Other Sports Events
The annual lawn bowls competition sees teams of law students compete for eternal bowls glory (and the best dressed prize). Lawn bowls promises an afternoon of sun and fun – it’s not to be missed!
Staff vs Student Cricket
Each year, the students take on the esteemed Law faculty in a cricket game for the ages. Fun is had by all, and the match often attracts crowds of students who soak up the atmosphere in the sun.
Find yourself a partner and make your way to the annual SOULS mixed doubles tennis tournament! Compete for tennis fame, or just come down for a laugh and a good time.
The annual golf day is always a hit. Get a group of mates together and sign up for your chance to lower that handicap or, at the very least, just enjoy the vibes!
Canterbury Sports Exchange
Every year, SOULS and LAWSOC (Canterbury’s Law Student Association) partake in a sports exchange. Rivalries run high, and students play for pride and bragging rights in a number of social sports. Of course, the exchange also allows for new friendships and lots of fun. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for more info about the exchange closer to the time.
